A Prayer

Duke GardensPrayer: May God grant to us the insight to see beyond the outward struggles of people’s lives and speak to the treasure that lies within them.

This is quite important because people get lost in the mix of things they see when in reality there is really a root cause that is making them act a certain way. There are needs that cause each of us to pursue certain things and act in certain ways. So this is a prayer that comes from the heart. As human beings we are affected by things in the physical world around us and by things in the spirit realm because there is a physical part of us (the body) and a spiritual side of us (the spirit and soul). We must discipline ourselves through self-control and work to do the right thing. As we work to do the right thing that leaves an open playing field for God to work in our hearts. When He changes our heart it becomes easier to do the right things because we will to do them.

Today I pray, “Lord, grant to me the insight to see beyond the outward struggles of people’s lives and speak to the treasure that lies within them. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “…The LORD does not see things the way you see them. People judge by the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” I want to look at the heart of people. I have learned that it explains much more than what is visible from where I am standing, and often helps to eliminate possible offense because I know why they acted the way they did. I want to have a healing tongue like Proverbs 15:4 which says, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”
